Aluminum Alloy 7075
The composition of 7075 aluminum alloy roughly includes 5.6–6.1% zinc, 2.1–2.5% magnesium, 1.2–1.6% copper, and less than half a percentage point of silicon, iron, manganese, titanium, chromium, and other metals. It is produced in a variety of states, some of which are 7075-0, 7075-T6, 7075-T651.
7075 aluminum alloy is an aluminum alloy with zinc as the main alloying element. It has excellent mechanical properties and exhibits good ductility, high strength, toughness, and good fatigue resistance. Due to microsegregation, it is more embrittled than many other aluminum alloys, but has significantly better corrosion resistance than 2000 alloy. It is one of the most commonly used aluminum alloys in high-stress structural applications and has been widely used in aircraft structural components.
Mechanical Properties of 7075 Plate:
7075-T6
T6 temper 7075 has an ultimate tensile strength of 510–540 MPa (74,000–78,000 psi) and a yield strength of at least 430–480 MPa (63,000–69,000 psi). It has an elongation at break of 5–11%.
The T6 temper is typically achieved by homogenizing cast 7075 at 450 °C for several hours, quenching, and then aging at 120 °C for 24 hours. This produces the peak strength of the 7075 alloy. The strength comes primarily from finely dispersed eta and eta’ precipitates within the grains and at the grain boundaries.
7075-T651
T651 temper 7075 plate has an ultimate tensile strength of 570 MPa (83,000 psi) and a yield strength of 500 MPa (73,000 psi). Its elongation at break is 3–9%. These properties may vary depending on the form in which the material is used. Thicker plates may exhibit lower strength and elongation than the numbers listed above.
7075-T651 aluminum is 7075 aluminum in the T651 temper. To achieve this temper, the metal is solution heat treated, stress relieved, and then artificially aged. Stress relief is achieved by stretching the metal an amount that depends on the type of standard forged product being manufactured (sheet, plate, bar, or forging).
