Alloy 20, also known as Carpenter 20, is a nickel-iron-chromium austenitic alloy developed for maximum resistance to acid attack, particularly sulfuric acid. This superalloy has excellent resistance to general, pitting and crevice corrosion in chemicals containing chlorides and sulfuric, phosphoric and nitric acids. It also contains niobium, which stabilizes sensitization and the resulting intergranular corrosion. With a nickel content of 33%, Alloy 20 is virtually immune to chloride stress corrosion cracking. This alloy is often used to address stress corrosion cracking issues that may occur with 316L stainless steel.
