ASTM A333 Grade 6 is a carbon steel pipe used for cryogenic applications and other applications requiring high notch toughness. It can operate in environments as low as -45°C (-50°F) and is available in both seamless and welded forms.
The ASTM A333 standard covers seamless and welded steel pipes for cryogenic applications. The Grade 6 steel covered is similar to AISI 4032 low alloy steel. ASTM A333 Grade 6 pipes shall be manufactured by seamless or welded processes without any filler metal added during welding.
Sizes of seamless and welded steel pipes for cryogenic applications:
ASTM A333 GR.6 Seamless Pipe, A333 GR.6 Pipe, A333 GR.8 Seamless Pipe, A333 GR.6 Cryogenic Pipe.
ASTM A333 GR.6 requires treatment to control its microstructure by one of the following methods:
● Normalizing: Heating to a uniform temperature of at least 1500 °F [815 °C] followed by cooling in air or in the cooling chamber of an atmosphere-controlled furnace.
● Tempering after normalizing: After normalizing, reheating to a suitable tempering temperature may be performed at the manufacturer's discretion.
● For seamless processing, this may be accomplished by controlling the temperature of the hot working and hot finishing operations to a final temperature between 1550 and 1750 °F [845 and 945 °C] followed by cooling in air or in an atmosphere-controlled furnace from an initial temperature of at least 1550 °F [845 °C].
● Tempering after controlled hot working and finishing heat treatments may be performed by reheating to a suitable tempering temperature at the manufacturer's discretion.
● Quenching and Tempering: Instead of any of the above treatments, Grades 1, 6, and 10 seamless pipe may be heated to a uniform temperature of at least 1500 °F [815 °C], quenched in water, and then heated to the appropriate tempering temperature.
